The toothbrush is an important usable cleaning instrument, which we use regularly. Most people start their morning with the use of a toothbrush. It is not confirmed when the first toothbrush was invented, however it is supposed that around 3000 BC the first toothbrush came up in the form of a chew stick, which was used by ancient civilians. It was in the shape of a slim stick with a frayed end. Another early form of toothbrush was the bristle toothbrush. It was similar to what we use today, but this toothbrush was made up of solid hog’s hairs connected to a handle made of bamboo or bone. The nylon-bristled toothbrush was introduced in 1938, and was rapidly accepted due to its good oral hygiene quality.
A revolution came in the market of America with the origin of electric toothbrushes in 1960. These toothbrushes were sold and produced on a mass level throughout the country.
Initially, the electronic toothbrush along with charger was invented in 1939 in Switzerland, but it did not come out in the open market until 1960. It was in 1961 when the company ‘General Electric’ came up with the rechargeable cordless toothbrush. The first rotary toothbrush, called the ‘Interplak’ became available to the general public in 1987. It was available in different models and varieties. It was believed that the Interplak was capable to eliminate plaque, and could prevent gingival bleeding better than other manual toothbrushes.
Nowadays, a number of varieties of toothbrushes can be found in the market at a large scale. Toothbrushes are used with fluoride for cleaning. Generally, dentists recommend the use of soft toothbrushes because hard toothbrushes can cause damage to your teeth. Soft bristles are also considered good at eliminating plaque and debris from the teeth. Besides this, dentists recommend the use of a small-handled toothbrush, as it can reach easily at each and every corner of your mouth. Toothbrushes are generally made of synthetic materials.
As there is such a wide variety of toothbrushes available today, this can create confusion for you when buying. Therefore it is necessary to consider that what kind of toothbrush will best suit your teeth. As an alternative, you can also use a powered toothbrush for cleaning your teeth, especially if you experience difficulties during brushing. You should replace your toothbrush within three months.
It is important that you are using a good quality toothbrush and changing it frequently. Undoubtedly, you would not like to have any diseases in your teeth, so by brushing regularly you can maintain healthy teeth as well as an attractive smile.

Manual or Electric Toothbrush

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Like many of you, since childhood I have used a manual toothbrush. I saw my family use manual toothbrushes so you go with what you know. Manual toothbrushes alone come in many shapes and sizes. So when you decide on which toothbrush you are comfortable with, they introduce electric ones.
Now you have the dilemma of which electric toothbrush to use for there are many of them available. But the biggest problem you will face is whether to stick with your trusted manual, which has worked for you for years or switch.
I watched a programme called “10 years younger” presented by Myleene Klass, which I found very informative to say the least. On this programme, they devised a demonstration. The lady dentist went into a shopping centre and asked 5 passers by if they had brushed their teeth that morning. Of course they all replied yes, I mean would you say no on national TV.
She then coated the 5 volunteer’s teeth with a blue dentist dye. She asked them to rinse and the blue dye showed that the darker the dye, the more build up of plaque there was on the teeth. The volunteers looked in the mirror with disgust.
I totally understood, you have brushed your teeth and then you find out that the brushing has not done a proper job. The dentist then got an electric toothbrush and used it on the dark blue plaqued teeth; you could see the plaque being brushed away. It would be great to able use a blue dye, in the morning to see if you were doing a good job. You must remember your toothbrush is just a tool it’s the user who needs to know how to use it to get the best results.
With so many toothbrushes on the market I can understand the public getting confused. There are rules on how to brush, how long to brush and which toothbrush to use. But consider the advertisements they are only pushing the benefits their products supports. To get a proper, professional opinion talk to your dentist, they are by far the best person to listen to. They are there to look after your teeth and keep them health. Some people may have sensitive gums and by using an electric brush could cause more harm than good. Your dentist knows best and they may even direct you to the brand of brush ideal for your teeth needs. Get the best advice you can before you make up your mind to switch or stay the same.
So there you have it. Manual or electric ask your dentist.
Happy brushing!

Electric Toothbrush – Experience the Ultimate Feeling of Tooth-brushing

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

One of the latest innovation in the health technology is Electric Toothbrush. An electronic toothbrush is a specially designed toothbrush which uses electric power to move the brush head. This is claimed by scientist that this kind of brushes are much more effective than normal manual toothbrushes. Because these toothbrushes leaves less room for patients to brush incorrectly. These are usually called ‘rotary toothbrushes’. This kind of toothbrushes were first invented in the year 1880. Although a true electric toothbrush was first conceived in the year 1880 and first started selling in Switzerland in the year 1939. The electronic brushes are mainly invented for the patients with limited motor skills and as well as for orthodontic patients. Generally Electric toothbrushes such as the Braun made toothbrushes have become increasingly cheap. However, part of this is offset by the high retail cost of the disposable brush heads. The electronic compartments present in most of the toothbrushes are completely sealed to prevent any damage due to contact on water. There are no metal contacts available with this tooth cleaning gadgets. These toothbrushes use to charge with inductive charging technique. These use replaceable batteries, disposable or rechargeable, storing them in the bottom, generally thicker than a normal manual toothbrush. According the results of the research it has been found that most electric toothbrushes are much more effective than the manual variety. The exception is only the “rotation-oscillation”-models, Braun’s Oral B-series fall in this category. According to a research done by some world’s best dental experts, it has been noticed that the way the electronic brushing is performed is of a higher importance than the choice of brush. Some electric toothbrush comes with an option that sets the power of the brushing action to either a “high” or “low” level. In maximum cases the effectiveness of the brush will be superior when the toothbrush is set to its higher setting. The lower power setting is usually suggested for those who have just started to use these electronic devices and find that their oral tissues aren’t healthy enough to tolerate the vigorous brushing action of the toothbrush when it is set on its highest setting. The elegant size and shape of an electric toothbrush’s brush head is vary from brand and model. It is very obvious that, a grown adult will be able to accommodate the use of a larger brush head than a young teenager.

Manual Toothbrushes Vs Electric Toothbrushes

When it comes to which kind of toothbrush is best for you, there really isn’t anything written on a stone tablet. Toothbrushes are lifestyle commodities and most of us do not even think about anything while purchasing toothbrushes. The kind of toothbrush use is entirely your prerogative; however it helps to know the relative merits and demerits of both of them and to know which one is more efficient or which one of these toothbrushes can effectively help you in preventing dental care.
Manual toothbrushes are plain and simple. No frills attached bristles on an elongated, elegantly but thoughtfully shaped handle. It does require a little skill to use these brushes, as in knowing where exactly to push it over so as to get the optimum cleaning action around the corners in one’s mouth and also as to how long must one keep brushing – both of which are not that common, though they might seem as simple skills to master. Efficiency of usage of manual toothbrushes tips the impetus on the user to derive the best from it.
On the other hand, Electric toothbrushes require lesser skill levels when it comes to using them. All one has to do is to throw the switch on and let the brush do its work. However, one must know as to how long one must keep it on. Since most people are not really aware of the time you need to keep brushing, some of these electric brushes come with an in built timer which automatically switches itself off after the pre-set time.
The results of a study – pertaining to the comparison between manual and electric toothbrushes by using three electric brushes against a manual one, ranging from 6 minutes to 30 minutes – have shown that electric toothbrushes have surpassed their manual counterparts by a wide margin, when it comes to dental plaque removal efficiency. It was also proven that more dental plaque was removed using an electric toothbrush as compared to the amount that could be gleaned out using a manual toothbrush. Some more studies done on the same subject have proven beyond doubt that electric toothbrushes are more superior to the manual ones and also help prevent concurrent gingivitis (which occurs due to dental plaque!)
Electric toothbrushes are certainly a convenient option for most people, while manual toothbrushes still exist for all those who still need the good-old hand to- mouth approach.
